I thought it might be a good to try to discuss some ideas for the best use of technologies in our classrooms. This wiki is a dynamic page, which will allow each of us to post our ideas. Then, as the tech geek within our schools, we may use our collaborative ideas to help encourage their use. I have set-up several different zones to type our ideas within. You may add additional zones as you see fit, or simply add your ideas under the appropriate zone.
Zone 1: Wikis A wiki is a collaborative and dynamic webpage that allows multiple user input.
- Small Group / Peer Mentoring... A wiki could be used as a tool to promote the writing process. You could divide students into groups of four. Initially, the group or an individual of the group would create a post. Then, each member of the group could access the post and make revisions or edit. The teacher would not access the post until the group submitted a finished project notice via e-mail or note. The teacher could decide to grade or simply enjoy the final product. Also, it is stored electronically, and can be viewed by parents or other interested parties. Seeing that it is available to the world and working within groups, I believe students would take great care in providing a polished product.
Zone 2: Blogs A blog is a communication tool that allow multiple users to comment on each others work.
- Peer Mentoring... I have created on my blog a page that would allow students to get help from each other with specific questions. The student could post the question, followed by other student responses. It is important to note to possible problems. First, students may not respond quickly enough. Second, other students responses may be inaccurate. However, if you address these concerns at the start of class, they can be overcome. Simply teel students to verify information and to try to view the site daily. It will not be perfect, but blogging for peer mentoring is still a powerful tool.
- Student / Teacher / Parent (in whatever order) Collaboration... As teachers create post, students and parents could comment on those ideas. It could be about field trips, experiments, assignments, test prep, or numerous other possibilities. This would help parents get involved that may work during times that make it difficult to get to school.
- Assessment... There is a site that allows you to create a quiz that you may attach online. This would allow students to practice in a non-threatening environment. I do not know much more about it, but here is the link... MyStudiyo.
Zone 3: Zoho Teachers may all access a doc to revise and edit.
- Team Collaboration... Teachers may create agendas, share lesson plans, schedules, etc.
Zone 4: Podcasts/Vodcasts A podcast is a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player. A vodcast is a podcast with images (video podcast)
- Small Group... I feel that students should create these for a few reasons. Most important, they are probably much better than we are at creating podcasts, and using the various software to edit them. Second, it is active learning if they are doing it.
